Short Stories

When I was in high-school, all I wrote were short stories. In my more mature years, I've returned to the form a few times. You can read a few of them right here on the site.

  • Transatlanticism

I wrote this short story on a whim one night. It was inspired by the Death Cab for Cutie song of the same name, but there is little further connection between my story and the song. My story is a unexpected mix of modern emotions, fantasy and allegory. It's in a different writing style to my usual approach. I took my to-be girlfriend out of time at work by giving her the short story to read, which I count as a win.

I entered this in the ACT Writers Centre short story competition in 2009 but didn't get anything.

  • Simon Freeman meets Greg Burnett

To help me flesh out my characters in Breathe I wrote a short series of stories, each narrated by major characters. By far the best one was "Simon Freemen meets Greg Burnett", nominally "written" by Maggie Brooke, the vivacious and viciously intelligent best friend of Charlotte, the protagonist of Breathe. While this story isn't necessarily canon, it served to give me a lot of neat ideas.
